Preparing the materials for roof repair is the first thing that you must do. Start by gathering the following materials: gloves, roof patching fabric, towel, roofing cement, blade, rags, metal bristle brush, nails, mallet, weighed markers, flat-soled shoes and binoculars.
Check out your roof for any signs of imperfections in it. You need to use the binoculars to scan your roof from the ground. Take note of all the problems you see on your roof. Now try walking all over your roof. Begin walking on one end and walk on every possible areas. Again, take note of the possible problems you see on the roof.
Observe all of your vents, skylights and air conditioning units. You need to look for places in which the roofing feature is separated from the roof. Find the places where the roofing tar or cement has cracks. Now, get a flashlight and start looking for water trails inside your home. Look for the origin of the leak and pierce that part with a nail. This is done so that you can identify the place later. If you see sunlight shining in from the ceiling, pierce a nail on that part too.
You should have recorded all sources of leaks before starting the repair. If you’re sure that you’ve found all the sources of leaks at home then it is time to repair it. First, remove the equipments where the cement has fractures and clean the area. Make sure to remove the old cement on it. Let the area dry and then put the equipment back. Apply a layer of roofing cement on the roof and the equipment. Then, go up to your roof, remove all shingles where roofing problems where spotted. Remove the nails under those shingles and apply a layer of roofing cement on it. Add new nails to the spot where you removed the old nails and apply another layer of roofing cement. Put the shingle back in place once you’re done.
Finally, go to the flat roofing materials with cracks and fix it. Apply roofing cement on it, then put a piece of roofing patching fabric and then, apply roofing cement. This should finish roof repair on your house. Now, you’re again protected from water leaks whenever it rains or snows.
